Roughneck Rolando "Dick-Dick" Pareja (Philippines) looks on as the drill pipe is disconnected in preparation to add another stand of drill pipe.

Roughnecks work together to help guide the threads of the drill pipe being added to the drill string into the uppermost piece of drill pipe.

Scientist Sanny Saito (Japan) measures the velocity of basalt samples.

Mads Radsted (ODP Paleomagnetism lab specialist, Denmark) shows Kim Bracchi (ODP Curator) how to archive hard rock samples.

Tyler Baird (ODP Physical Properties lab specialist) measures the weight and volume of basalt samples to obtain density and porosity while Lisa Crowder (ODP Yeoperson) looks on.

Tyler Baird (ODP Physical Properties lab specialist) helps scientist Masataka Kinoshita (Japan) analyze the thermal conductivity of a basalt sample recovered from the ocean crust at the bottom of Hole 1173B.

As the JOIDES Resolution conducts six 2-month cruises each year, preventative maintenance on every aspect of the ship is an ongoing effort. In this picture, maintenance is being conducted on the cables for one the three shipboard cranes.

Because of Leg 196's emphasis on LWD and ACORK operations instead of coring, some projects that were not completed during previous coring legs are being worked on now. Here, Mads Radsted (ODP Paleomagnetism lab specialist and "Cable Guy," Denmark) proudly poses by the results of work installing the new computer network cabling.

Scott Pederson (Transocean Operations Manager) inspects the bridge plug used to seal off the interior of the ACORK casing.

A ritual for each ODP leg is the group photograph. Here, all shipboard participants are starting to gather on the bow prior to the photograph.
