Although the Catemar crew does a great job providing a wide range of food to satisfy the many cultures on the ship over the two months at sea, sometimes people take time to make special treats from their home country. In this picture, Takoyaki Technician Soichi Moriyama (Visiting Marine Laboratory Specialist; Marine Works Japan) carefully prepares takoyaki (small balls of a pancake-like mixture with octopus inside). Soichi works for the company that will be providing laboratory technical services to the Japanese riser-drilling vessel Chikyu and is sailing on Leg 205 to see how these services are provided in the ODP program.
