Co-chief Scientist Julie Morris (USA; left) and Inorganic Geochemist Miriam Kastner (USA) pose with the CORK screen in the moonpool below the rig floor. One of the major objectives of Leg 205 is to install long-term observatories in the boreholes to sample formation fluids and monitor temperature and pressure. The screen shown in this picture (shiny vertical tube) will be placed down into the hole in the seafloor and located at a particular zone of interest. Water samplers will be placed inside the screen as well as temperature and pressure monitoring equipment. The screen acts like a filter and prevents sediments from clogging the instruments. |
