Scientists put on safety gear in preparation to take a tour of the "bit room" (lower sack) and riser hold. The lower sack is the room where all the bits used for drilling in different types of sediments and rocks are stored. The riser hold is where the casing is stored (it is larger than a racquetball court). From left to right: Dawn Cardace (Sedimentologist; USA), Marion Pfender (Physical Properties; Germany), Cara Santelli (Microbiologist; USA), and Evan Solomon (Geochemist; USA).
