Although tours are given for scientists on all ODP expeditions to introduce them to the shipboard operations and coring tools, Leg 210 is using a substantial amount of tools and equipment that are not routinely used. ODP Operations Manager Brian Jonasson explains some of the hardware for installing casing (large metal pipe) that we are installing into the drill hole to keep it from collapsing. ODP Leg 210 is attempting to drill a hole 2100 meters below the seafloor, which is 4600 m below the sea surface. This requires that nearly the entire hole be cased.
