The first drill bits used on Leg 210. The large blue bit near Adam Klaus' (ODP Leg Project Manager) right foot is an 18.5-inch tricone bit used for drilling (not coring). The long cylindrical brown piece of pipe diagonally across the foreground is the "underreamer" (UR) bit. The UR is just above the 18.5-inch tricone bit and allows a hole to be drilled with a larger diameter through which the tool can pass. When activated by pumping fluid through it, the arms open up to ~22 inches, start to rotate, and cut the outside of the hole. You can see the arms on the side of the tool with the edge of the cutting structures just visible.
