Discrete ash layers are identified by sharp peaks in GRAPE density and magnetic susceptibility; dispersed ash zones have more subtle expressions using these parameters (Rack et al., 1996). The low-susceptibility zone in each hole between 107 and 103 mbsf is associated with several diatom last appearance datums, suggesting one or more apparent hiatuses in sedimentation within this interval (Koç and Scherer, 1996). Susceptibility values should be multiplied by 0.63 × 10-5 to convert to SI units of volume susceptibility.
