The paleomagnetic properties of samples from each igneous unit recovered from Holes SEG70A and SEG71A were determined. Both samples contain a small secondary component related to viscous and/or drill-induced magnetization (Fig. F5). After removal of secondary components at 10-mT alternating fields, the direction of the characteristic magnetic remanence is defined using standard principal component analysis (Kirschvink, 1980). Because the azimuth of the drill cores is unknown, only the characteristic inclination is meaningful. A summary of demagnetization results are presented in Table T4, showing that both samples have reversed polarity.
