The igneous units from both Sites SEG70 and SEG71 were analyzed by shore-based XRF procedures. The results are summarized in Table T2. Comparison of these samples demonstrated their striking chemical similarities. Both units are hypersthene normative (Hy = 13–14 wt%) and are relatively evolved with Mg numbers of 0.48, SiO2 contents of ~49 wt%, and TiO2 contents of ~2 wt%. Both units have volatile contents of ~1.0 wt% and Fe2O3/FeO ratios of 0.44–0.50. With the exception of relatively higher normative hypersthene contents, these igneous units also closely resemble lavas from the upper series on Transect EG65, Sites SEG01 and SEG02 on Transect EG66, and samples recovered on Transect EG68.
