Carbonate events CC 2-1 and CC 5-2 are larger than the modern CaCO3 rain and must have been caused by changes in CaCO3 production. A majority of the other k.y.-scale events are larger than the CaCO3 MAR when deep ocean waters are saturated with respect to CaCO3 and are most probably caused by changes in CaCO3 production.
