A comparison of the L* signal (Nederbragt et al., Chap. 29, this volume) to CaCO3 and Corg (Lyle et al., Chap. 11, this volume) shows that the L* depth series is significantly different from the CaCO3 series. CaCO3 is not the only sedimentary phase controlling the lightness of the sediment. High Corg is a significant factor that makes the sediment darker. Note that Corg is plotted reversed to CaCO3 in order that it have the same sense of change with respect to L*. Using a simple linear combination of Corg and CaCO3 time series it is possible to reconstruct the L* signal.
