This folder contains core description files compiled by the Leg 169 Shipboard Scientific Party. These cores were collected from August to October, 1996.
In the folders are files generated by the proprietary core description software package AppleCORE, by Mike Ranger (Copyright, 1989, 1995). These files are only accessible with the AppleCORE reader provided on this CD-ROM or if you own the AppleCORE program. At the time of production of this volume, AppleCORE would only operate on a Macintosh computer.
Because of the prototype nature of the AppleCORE software for Ocean Drilling Program core descriptions and the special requirements of describing the varied lithologies sampled during Leg 169, data were entered into archival areas of the software that do not equate to the output labels. For example, there was no data field for recording degree of sulfide mineralization in the AppleCORE version used during Leg 169. These data were recorded by selecting the Lithification data entry screen. Relative degree of sulfide mineralization was recorded for an interval using the grayscale patterns under Consolidation with the following equivalents:
Consolidation term = Intensity of sulfide mineralization
Extreme = Very high (>75%)
Strong = High (30%-75%)
Moderate = Moderate (10%-30%)
Poor = Low (2%-10%)
Unconsolid = Negligible (<2%)
Similarly, drilling disturbance was recorded from the Porosity data entry window, with patterns as defined in the custom files from each site. Structures were recorded from the Post depositional features/Fractures icon window. Sedimentary and diagenetic features were recorded from the Physical Structures icon window. Lithostratigraphic units were not recorded in these data files. These units were only added to the final output graphics files. As a result of these modifications, if a user creates a strip log from the AppleCORE data files, the headers will differ from both the data type entered and the barrel sheet as reproduced on the CD-ROM. Please use the information above to interpret the AppleCORE files.
Please note that these files are shipboard data compiled by scientists who participated on ODP Leg 169. These were assembled under time constraints and do not incorporate final interpretations or conclusions of the Shipboard Scientific Party. These files represent the equivalent of field notes and should not be considered as anything else than a guide to sampling the cores.
