The lighter and upper shaded area of both figure panels represents the accretionary prism and the equivalent sediments in the incoming sedimentary section. The darker and lower shaded area of both figure panels indicates the portion of the sedimentary section being underthrust and its equivalent seaward of the deformation front. The lighter area separating the shaded areas is the low-density interval that is associated with the décollement zone and proto-décollement zone. It is not equivalent in thickness to the structurally defined décollement or proto-décollement but may encompass or be included in them. Depth scales on both upper and lower panels indicate relative, not absolute, depth.
