PHOTOMICROGRAPH SCANS READ ME This briefly describes the contents of the PHOTOMIC folder. There are three subfolders, PHOTOLOG, PHOTOTIF, and SCALES, as well as two files, RULERS.PDF and README.TXT. During Leg 176, following the shooting of a calibration roll, seven rolls of photomicrographs were shot using either a Zeiss polarizing axioscope for higher magnifications or a Zeiss polarizing stereoscope for lower magnifications. In PHOTOLOG, photo data for rolls 2 through 8 are included as ASCII and PDF files following the labeling convention of PHOT_R2.TXT and PHOT_R2.PDF. In each file, the photomicrographs are listed in the order in which they were shot by the frame number on the negatives and the contact sheets, which are on file at the Ocean Drilling Program. The thin-section identification and objective magnification are also listed, as well as a brief description of the subject of each photomicrograph and whether the photographs were obtained using transmitted, reflected, or cross-polarized light. Total magnifications are 10x objective magnifications. RULERS.PDF gives the scale bars for each objective magnification and photographs of the scales, which also can be found individually in the SCALES folder. Within the SCALES folder are two subfolders AXIOSCOP and BINOCULR. The individual files used to create the RULERS.PDF file are contained within these two folders and follow the naming convention of MAG10X.PDF for a magnification of 10x. In MAG2P5X.PDF the "2P5X" means "two point five magnification." During Leg 176 more than 100 of these photomicrographs were scanned from 8 in x 11 in prints at 150 dpi. These are stored as TIFF files in PHOTOTIFF. The individual scanned images are identified by their roll and frame number. Each PHOTOLOG file also has a column indicating which were scanned. For example, roll 2, frame 3 is 02_03.TIF. In general, photomicrographs were selected for scanning on the basis of photo quality and usefulness. Those not scanned may be out of focus, unevenly illuminated, repetitive shots at different exposures, or poorly composed. The photomicrographs that were used for illustrations in the Site Report were professionally rescanned at 350 dpi. These are embedded in the site report itself. Each PHOTOLOG file has a column indicating which photomicrographs were used as figures and gives the corresponding figure number. The interested user of these files may consequently view or copy figures from the site report and/or the scanned photomicrographs in PHOTOTIFF. Prints of any of the photomicrographs may be requested from the Data Librarian of the Ocean Drilling Program by e-mail at database@odp.tamu.edu.
