Only two samples were obtained at Site 1114 for microbiological analysis. Bacteria were present in both samples examined. At 17.25 mbsf there were 6.9 × 106 cells/cm3, of which 3.3 × 105 cells/cm3 were dividing or recently divided; at 45.97 mbsf there were 2.4 × 106 cells/cm3, including 6.7 × 104 cells/cm3 dividing and divided cells. These data are consistent with the model of Parkes et al. (1994).
