Figure F2.
Estimates of thermal gradient and maximum temperatures assuming end-member
values of basal heat flux (28 and 100 mW/m2) and using the measured
sediment thermal conductivities obtained during Leg 180 drilling for a range of
sites. Maximum calculated sediment temperatures are predicted to be ~85°C—observed
temperatures are significantly less than this value. Measured maximum
temperatures range from 28° and 31°C for Sites 1115 and 1109, respectively.
Sites 1108 and 1118 have maximum temperature gradients of 100°and 60°C km-1.
Such sediment temperatures are ineffective in affecting vitrinite reflectance.
