ORGANIC AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

We determined concentrations of carbonate in sediments from Hole 1136A on ~1 sample per core (Table T14). In addition, we analyzed four of the sediment samples for organic carbon, total nitrogen, sulfur, and hydrogen. The results of the analyses are discussed in "Lithostratigraphy".

We also analyzed five altered volcaniclastic sediment samples for total carbon, total nitrogen, sulfur, and hydrogen (Table T15). These data are discussed in "Lithostratigraphy", and "Physical Volcanology". Finally, for basalts that were analyzed by XRF, we determined total carbon, total nitrogen, sulfur, and hydrogen using the NCS analyzer (Table T15). These data are useful for assessing the degree of alteration in the basalts (e.g., total carbon and hydrogen can be converted to CO2 and H2O, respectively, and compared with loss on ignition values). Further discussion of these data can be found in "Igneous Petrology" and "Alteration and Weathering".
