ORGANIC AND INORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY

We measured concentrations of carbonate in sediments from Hole 1138A on ~1 sample per core (Table T20). In addition, we analyzed 26 of the sediment samples for organic carbon, total nitrogen, sulfur, and hydrogen. The results of the analyses are discussed in "Lithostratigraphy".

For volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks that were analyzed by XRF, we measured total carbon, total nitrogen, sulfur, and hydrogen using the NCS analyzer (Table T21). These data are useful for assessing the degree of alteration in the basalts (e.g., total carbon and hydrogen can be converted to CO2 and H2O, respectively, and compared with loss on ignition values).
