ANALYTICAL METHODS

Immediately following extraction, all pore water was filtered through a 0.45-µm polysulfone filter and analyzed onboard ship for salinity by refractive index, pH (±0.01; 1s) by ion-specific electrode (ISE), and alkalinity (±2%) by automated potentiometric Gran titration with 0.1-N HCl. Aliquots were shipped to the University of Hawaii where they were analyzed for chlorinity (±0.3%) by automated electrochemical titration with AgNO3, sulfate (±3%) and bromide (±2.4%) by ion chromatography, fluoride (±0.5%) by ISE with correction for Mg concentration, and K (±2%) by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Si, B, Mn, and Fe were determined by inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometry with a precision of 2% to 5%. Na (±0.3%) was calculated from charge balance. Results are given in Table T1 and Figures F1, F2, F3, and F4.
