The dark zone of most altered rock was formerly adjacent to a fracture lined with secondary minerals at the base of the rock that was beveled off during the coring process. The rock has three alteration zones: (1) dark orange-red next to the bottom of the piece; (2) dark gray above that, with small oblique extensions along microfractures; and (3) tannish gray, to the right of the vertical fracture at the top of the piece. The darker gray rock left of that fracture is the least altered in the specimen. The zone of most intense orange staining has possible dissolution cavities.
