AGE MODEL AND MASS ACCUMULATION RATES

A 239-mcd-thick (203.8 mbsf) late Quaternary hemipelagic sediment sequence was recovered at Site 1234, with a basal age <0.26 Ma (Zone NN21; see "Biostratigraphy"). The entire record is of normal polarity and within the Bruhnes Chron (1n; see "Paleomagnetism"). A conservative estimate of the average sedimentation rate is therefore ~788 m/m.y. A detailed age-depth model was not created shipboard, as datums are not abundant enough at this site of extremely high sedimentation rates.
