Publishing Instructions for ODP Scientists

Scientific Results Manuscript Submission Guidelines

Author Requirements for Initial Submission

  • NEW Online Manuscript Submission

  • Authors must submit all manuscripts to: Publications Coordinator, Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, 1000 Discovery Drive, College Station, TX 77845, USA.
  • If submissions are sent close to the deadline, ODP recommends that authors send manuscripts via express mail. Manuscripts will not be accepted if they are postmarked past the deadline.
  • For initial manuscript submission requirements, please see Appendix A in the ODP Publications Policy until revisions to the Author Instructions are complete.
  • Also see Software Specifications.
  • Information Form and Copyright License Agreement Form.

    ODP Submission Check

  • Upon submission, all papers are reviewed by the ODP publications coordinator and the ODP staff scientist to ensure submissions are complete, are of reviewable quality, and meet the standards outlined in this guide.
  • Manuscripts that do not meet ODP standards will be returned to the author and will not go through the review process unless they are revised to meet ODP standards before the submission deadline.

    ODP Manuscript Tracking Number

  • Once approved for review, each manuscript receives a manuscript number that will be used to track it throughout the peer-review and production processes. Each author will receive notification of their manuscript number.
  • Authors must refer to this number in all correspondence with the publications coordinator.

    Peer-Review and Revision Process

  • All manuscripts submitted for publication in a Scientific Results (SR) volume are peer-reviewed under the guidance of an Editorial Review Board (ERB), composed of the two co-chief scientists and the ODP staff scientist for the cruise, and/or a specialist from outside the shipboard scientific party.
  • Once a manuscript has been approved for review, the ERB, the external peer reviewers, and the ODP editor receive copies.
  • One ERB member is responsible for coordinating the review process for each paper. On receipt of the reviewers' comments, the assigned ERB member evaluates all recommended changes and notifies the correspondence author of the manuscript status.
  • If revisions are required before a paper can be considered for acceptance, the manuscript is returned to the correspondence author. See Author Requirements for Revised Submission.
  • It is the correspondence author's responsibility to meet the revision deadlines, otherwise the paper will not be considered for publication in the volume. See Deadlines for publishing in the Scientific Results volume.
  • When revisions have been completed, the ERB member, in consultation with the other members of the board, makes a final decision on the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript and the author is notified.

    Author Requirements for Revised Submission

  • After final acceptance, authors are required to submit a final manuscript copy to: Publications Coordinator, Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, 1000 Discovery Drive, College Station, TX 77845, USA; PubCrd@iodp.tamu.edu.
  • If submissions are sent close to the deadline, ODP recommends that authors use express mail services to send their materials. Manuscripts will not be accepted if they are postmarked after the deadline.
  • For revised manuscript submission requirements, please see Appendix A in the ODP Publications Policy until revisions to the Author Instructions are complete.

    Author Galley Review

  • After a paper has been copyedited and typeset, the correspondence author is sent the galley proof.
  • It is the correspondence author's responsibility to proof all galley material with the utmost care because this is the final opportunity to check the manuscript before publication. ODP will only accept galley corrections that are received from the correspondence author.
  • Galley corrections are limited to errors of fact and typography that have been introduced during preparation or typesetting of the manuscript. No revisions to style or content may be made at this stage.
  • Corrections should be written on a printed copy of the manuscript and mailed back to ODP (fax transmissions are often difficult to read). If corrections are returned close to the deadline please send via express mail. We do not encourage using e-mail as the sole form for submitting galley corrections because the ODP editor risks misinterpreting the author's intended changes. If corrections are sent via e-mail, please also send your original with marked corrections so the editor can use this as a backup.
  • See list of Standard Proofreading Marks.

    Offprints

All material is published in CD-ROM and WWW formats. Because readers can download and print "offprints" from the electronic files, free printed offprints will no longer be made available by ODP.
