(16280A/16291A) "Southern Ocean paleoclimate in the "41k" world: Stable isotope, geochemical, and sedimentologic variability" * This study will be focused on developing time scales and paleoclimate records for Leg 177 sites 1091 and 1089 during the Pleistocene interval approx. 1.2 to 1.8 Ma (spanning at least Marine Isotope Stages 35-65). This time is one during which the dominant orbital periodicity in climate was associated with the 41,000-year obliquity cycle, and is a time period over which Southern Ocean and Northern Hemisphere climate variations became nearly synchronous (Hodell and Venz, 1992). This study will compare the amplitudes and phases of paleoclimate in the Southern Ocean and North Atlantic on orbital and higher time scales. Does the Southern Ocean lead the Northern Hemisphere during this as it does during the past 500,000 years? Do variations in carbonate preservation follow the "Atlantic" pattern in counterphase to the Pacific? Do dust inputs vary in phase with the North over this time interval, and are they associated with changes in carbon cycling as in the later Pleistocene? 55. Hewitt, A., Ortiz, J., and others (16139A) "Electrical resistivity measurements of marine sediments" * Used in conjunction with spectral reflectance and multi-sensor logging data, to investigate sediment mineralogy and fabric. * Sediment resistivity, generated with the OSU-SCAT, depends on porosity and tortuosity, the volume fractions of the sedimentary constituents, their individual conductivities, and the sedimentary microstructure. Resistivity can also be used to estimate diffusion coefficients for ionic species. In principle, the manner in which saturated sediments transmit electrical current is analogous to their ability to permit molecular diffusion. 65. Hewitt, A., and others (DATA) "A comparison of Mid to Late Pleistocene glacial cycles in deep-sea cores from the Southern Ocean (Site 1094) and Northeast Pacific (Site 887)." * Sedimentation rates at Site 1094 are very similar to those at Site 887 (and 4 site survey cores) in the Gulf of Alaska. A thorough chronostratigraphy has been established for these cores, including C-14 dates through the last termination in two cores and d18O isotope stratigraphies in all (to ~800 kyr at 887). Results from Leg 177 will address relationships between the high-latitude Southern Ocean and North Atlantic, and also between the Antarctic and Laurentide ice sheets. The response of the high-latitude North Pacific and Cordilleran ice sheet to the North Atlantic-Southern Ocean system can be investigated through some, as yet, unpublished MST and IRD data sets from Site 887 that span the Mid to Late Pleistocene. 66. Howard, W., Ortiz, J., Hodell, D., Filipelli, G., Kuhn, G., and others (16280A) "Pleistocene variations in carbonate mass-accumulation rates at Leg 177 sites: Reflectance-based estimates" * Carbonate burial in the Southern Ocean reflects both variations in particle production and variable seabed preservation. Leg 177 sites provide an opportunity to investigate both sources of variability in sediments that are deep and well equatorward of the polar front zone (Site 1089) and sites that are relatively shallow and close to the APF (Sites 1093 and 1094). Site 1091 is both deep and near the APF, but has as a shallow reference Site 704, providing the possibility to estimate depth-dependent carbonate dissolution loss (e.g. Curry and Cullen, 1997, Leg 154 SR Volume). Previous studies suggest that Southern Ocean carbonate preservation varies with the input of NADW, with great preservation during interglacial episodes of high NADW production (Howard and Prell, 1994). In addition, carbonate productivity relative to opal varies in the Subantarctic and near the APF, with greater carbonate production in interglacial stages (Howard and Prell, 1992; Hodell 1993). This study will make use of shipboard diffuse color reflectance and shipboard and postcruise carbonate measurements, combined with GRAPE and reflectance-tuned age models (Ortiz and Howard paper), to generate carbonate MAR records, and to examine the variability of the Southern Ocean carbonate system on orbital-to- (potentially) centennial time scales. 67. King, S., Froelich, P., Charles, C., and others (16198A/16261A) "Interstitial water chemistry of carbonate and siliceous oozes of the Subantarctic South Atlantic: Results from ODP Leg 177" * This will be a synthesis of shipboard pore water data along with additional shore-based analyses of pore waters and squeeze cakes. ** I would write this up for either printed volume or CD-ROM, but would infintely prefer printed volume 87. King, S., Bohrmann, G., Kuhn, G., Froelich, P., Diekmann, B., and others (16199A/16195A) "Geochemical investigations into early porcellanite formation" * The geochemical investigations will focus initially on a series of high resolution pore water samples collected from within and around porcellanite (opal-CT) intervals in cores form Site 1094. Analyses will include d18O of porcellanite and pore waters, possibly also Si isotopes on porcellanites and diatoms (opal-A) near the porcellanites, dissolved Si and Ge concentrations, % opal in squeeze cakes, and major and minor elemental analyses of pore waters and squeeze cakes. ** This work would not be published in a CD-ROM SR volume, but might be considered for a printed SR volume. 88. King, S., P. Froelich, C. Charles, D. Hodell, et al. (16261A/16199A/16200A) "High resolution (Ge/Si)OPAL across Stages 1/2, 5/6 and 11/12: the timing of whole ocean changes in Ge/Si and its relation to the oceanic Si cycle" * Previous studies have shown that Ge/Si ratio in diatoms faithfully records the Ge/Si in the contemporaneous ocean, and further that the Ge/Si ratio in diatoms back to Stage 12 shows highly coherent and systematic variations between a Ge/Si = 0.7 x 10-6 during interglacials and 0.55 x 10-6 during glacials. The reason for theses changes is not well understood. It may be related to changes in the sedimentary Ge sink or it may be related to changes in terrestrial weathering patterns which would in turn imply changes in the whole ocean Si budget. High resolution measurements across three glacial terminations at one or more of the high resolution sites sampled during Leg 177 will elucidate the timing of these changes in Ge/Si and allow us to better constrain the Ge and Si mass balances over glacial/interglacial climate cycles. These measurements will be done using the same samples processed for foraminifer stable isotope measurements to establish high resolution chronostratigraphy for the changes in (Ge/Si)OPAL. ** This work would not likely not be published in a CD-ROM SR volume, but might be considered for a printed SR volume.
