A new core is received on the catwalk at Site 1166. Ice and snow on the drill floor caused a few problems for the drilling operations. Temperatures dropped frequently below -6 deg C (21 deg F) with a wind chill factor of -28 deg C (-18 deg F).

The southernmost site of Leg 188 at 67.7 deg S in Prydz Bay. At temperatures of -3 deg C (26 deg F) and almost without any wind, this was a very pleasant day to enjoy a few quiet moments on deck. A green flash visible during a spectacular sunrise.

The Aurora Australis: we were able to observe the southern lights, which are very difficult to photograph, once. Unfortunately, this phenomenon was mostly hidden behind a thick cloud cover. After crossing the Antarctic Circle, Australis Rex, the Ruler of the Southern Winds and Sovereign of all the Frozen Reaches, visits the ship to initiate all encrusted Rednoses, including Captain Tom Ribbens.

The ship seems to attract the few icebergs in the area. This one came so close to our drill site that we were forced to move out of the way.
