New Philips XRD Software was installed and debugged on Leg 165.
After a review of several vendors' equipment by the scientific community, the X-ray LWG concluded that the Philips hardware is the most appropriate for the shipboard environment. ODP/TAMU is also familiar with Philips service personnel. However, before a purchase is made, the LWG recommends that X-ray marine laboratory specialists see the new Philips system in operation and assess for themselves how well it will meet the demands of shipboard operations.
Work on detailed "how to" manuals for preparing and running X-ray fluorescence samples as well as for the XRD equipment is nearly complete. The documents will be provided to appropriate members of SMP as well as knowledgeable members of the user community for review.
