Leg 190 scientists Ako Taira (Co-chief scientist; Japan), Kohtaro Ujiie (Structural Geologist; Japan), and Chris Fergusson (Sedimentologist; Australia) examine a core containing sandy turbidites from the Nankai Trough subduction zone. Mahi mahi swim around the ship during a barbeque lunch. A 2-meter long hammerhead shark was seen just before this but, unfortunately, there's no picture.


Toshio Hisimitsu (Paleomagnetist; Japan), Alex Maltman (Structural Geologist; United Kingdom), Mario Sanchez-Gomez (Structural Geologist; Spain), and Harold Tobin (Structural Geologist; United States) collect samples for shipboard and postcruise research. Harold Tobin (Structural Geologist and Downhole Logging Scientist; United States), Adam Klaus (Staff Scientist, United States), and Juan Jaramillo (Marine Laboratory Specialist; Columbia) watch the preparation of the downhole logging tools before they are used at Site 1173.
